Morena urged to purge aspirants amid criticism of expanding media control

Lawyer Rubén Cayetano García called on the national leadership of Mexico's ruling Morena party to remove candidates who have violated the June 17 internal call, citing the use of unauthorized propaganda such as banners, micro‑perforated sheets and costly displays. He argued that these breaches undermine the party’s transformation agenda and urged a strict application of the selection rules.

At the same time, analysts criticize the administration of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and his successor‑in‑waiting, Governor Claudia Sheinbaum, for deepening control over the media. The daily “mañanera” briefings, selective advertising, and new mechanisms to police radio and television content are seen as attempts to monopolize the national narrative, raising concerns about press freedom and democratic discourse.
