Morena and Mexico's INE debate electoral rules ahead of 2027 elections

Mexico's ruling party Morena is navigating several electoral challenges as the 2027 elections approach. In Xicotepec, mayor Carlos Barragán Amador says he will seek re‑election and is prepared to switch from Morena to the Labour Party if needed. Meanwhile, INE councilor Arturo Castillo warned that “no existe como tal un vacío legal” but called for early fiscal oversight of anticipatory political spending, saying the lack of regulation “generates distrust in the upcoming election.” Castillo also noted more than 400 complaints related to pre‑campaign activities. Morena is also weighing a proposal in Tamaulipas to extend municipal terms from three to four years, though no formal initiative exists yet. Polls show Morena’s support for the lower‑house vote slipping by several points, yet the party remains ahead of rivals. These developments reflect internal party manoeuvring and institutional scrutiny ahead of the 2027 electoral cycle.
