Morgan Freeman releases symphonic blues album at age 89
At 89 years old, actor Morgan Freeman has released his first musical project, titled ‘Morgan Freeman’s Symphonic Blues Experience’. Released on August 7 through Decca Records, the 12-track album serves as a production and narration project rather than a vocal performance by the actor.
The album blends traditional blues with orchestral arrangements provided by London’s Chineke! Orchestra. It features prominent blues musicians including Taj Mahal, Keb’ Mo’, Shemekia Copeland, Lawrence ‘Boo’ Mitchell, and Tiernii Jackson. The repertoire covers nearly a century of blues history, including interpretations of works by Son House, Albert King, and Blind Willie Johnson.
Freeman, who co-founded the Ground Zero Blues Club in Clarksdale, Mississippi, 25 years ago, describes himself as a ‘blues enthusiast’ rather than a professional musician. The project originated from a touring live show and aims to preserve the genre. Profits from the album are designated for the Ground Zero Arts Foundation. A supporting tour includes scheduled stops in Houston, Memphis, and Gulfport.
