Brazil imposes R$ 700 million in fines on fuel distributors for abusive pricing
The Brazilian government has implemented several measures to combat rising fuel prices driven by international oil market volatility and conflicts in the Middle East. The National Petroleum Agency (ANP) has issued first-instance fines totaling over R$ 700 million against fuel distributors for abusive price hikes, with some cases showing gross profit margins increasing by more than 1,350%.
To mitigate consumer impact, the Ministry of Finance is maintaining a diesel subsidy of R$ 2.12 per liter. Additionally, the government has introduced stricter penalties via a new provisional measure, allowing fines for unjustified price increases to reach up to R$ 500 million per infraction.
Enforcement efforts include 'Operação Carga Pesada,' which conducted 241 inspections across the country involving federal agencies and consumer protection offices (Procons). Following these actions, the National Consumer Secretariat (Senacon) has initiated 70 administrative sanctioning processes against various gas stations and distributors.
