Overview

The Brazilian National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP) has issued first-instance fines exceeding R$ 700 million against nine fuel distributors for abusive price increases. Investigations revealed profit margin increases reaching as high as 1,350%.

To address price volatility linked to Middle East conflicts, the government has maintained a diesel subsidy of R$ 2.12 per liter. Furthermore, a new provisional measure has significantly increased potential penalties for unjustified price hikes, raising the maximum fine from approximately R$ 3.2 million to as much as R$ 500 million per infraction.
