Morning hydration benefits suggested by nutrition experts

Experts suggest starting the morning with a glass of water, ideally between 250 and 500 milliliters, before consuming coffee. This habit helps replenish fluids lost through breathing and sweating during sleep.

Ethan Balk, an associate professor of clinical nutrition at NYU Steinhardt, notes that morning hydration can influence energy levels and overall well-being. Proper hydration is also linked to cognitive functions; research published in Psychological Research in 2020 indicated that 12 hours without water can negatively impact judgment and decision-making.

Drinking water before coffee may also benefit the digestive system by aiding food passage and stimulating bowel movements. For some individuals, water can mitigate stomach discomfort caused by the acidity of coffee. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics recommends an average daily fluid intake of approximately 2.7 liters for women and 3.7 liters for men.
