Moroccan House of Councilors elects new committee chairs
The Moroccan House of Councilors has elected new chairpersons for two key committees: Justice, Legislation, and Human Rights, and Interior, Local Authorities, and Basic Infrastructure.
Moulay Abderrahmane Abila, representing the National Rally of Independents (RNI) group, was elected chair of the Justice, Legislation, and Human Rights Committee. Aboubakr Abid, from the Socialist Party group, was elected chair of the Interior, Local Authorities, and Basic Infrastructure Committee.
The elections followed the formation of a new government, which shifted the political positioning of various groups within the House. According to Vice President Lahcen Haddad, the changes were necessary to align the Council's structures with constitutional requirements regarding the rights of the opposition. Under Article 99 of the Council's internal regulations and Article 69 of the Constitution, the chairmanship of the Justice Committee is reserved for the opposition. The recent government formation resulted in the RNI group moving to the opposition, while the Socialist Party group is no longer part of the opposition.
