Moroccan nationals face detention and disappearance in Algeria
Moroccan advocacy groups are raising alarms regarding the status of Moroccan nationals in Algeria. The Moroccan Association for the Assistance of Migrants in Difficult Situations reports that approximately 620 Moroccans are currently held in Algerian prisons, while the families of 396 individuals continue to search for the fate of missing persons.
In a separate development, the Association for the Defense of Moroccans Victims of Forced Displacement from Algeria has condemned the arrest of 61 Moroccans in Oran. Algerian authorities accused the group of planning sabotage after allegedly entering from Tunisia via mountainous border regions. The association has questioned the credibility of these allegations, describing them as lacking clear evidence and potentially provocative.
There are growing concerns regarding the impact of new Algerian nationality laws, which allow for the stripping of citizenship under specific conditions. Advocates warn this could affect Moroccans living in Algeria, including those who obtained citizenship through marriage or naturalization, potentially jeopardizing their legal status and residency.
