Algeria-Morocco diplomatic and security tensions
Overview
Algerian national security services reported the dismantling of an international criminal network in the Oran region, involving the arrest of 61 Moroccan nationals. The Direction générale de la Sûreté nationale (DGSN) alleged the group planned acts of sabotage to undermine national security. Authorities stated the suspects entered via Tunisia and moved through the El Tarf province before reaching Oran. The group reportedly included at least one former member of the Moroccan army.
Following these arrests, Moroccan advocacy groups raised concerns regarding the treatment and status of Moroccan nationals in Algeria. Reports indicate approximately 620 Moroccans are held in Algerian prisons, while families of 396 individuals are searching for missing persons.
In response to the Oran arrests, the Association for the Defense of Moroccans Victims of Forced Displacement from Algeria questioned the credibility of the sabotage allegations, describing them as “lacking clear evidence and potentially provocative.” Additionally, advocates expressed concern that new Algerian nationality laws could jeopardize the legal status and residency of Moroccans living in the country.
