Moroccan political shifts following September 2026 elections

The legislative elections for the House of Representatives held on September 23, 2026, have triggered a significant realignment within Morocco's House of Councillors, which remains in office until 2027. While the formal organizational structure and parliamentary group leadership will remain unchanged, political alignments are shifting to ensure coordination with the new government coalition in the lower house.

The new governing majority in the House of Councillors will consist of the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM), the Istiqlal Party, the Moroccan General Labour Union (UGTM), and the Socialist Union of Forces of Progress. As part of this shift, the Socialist Union group, led by Youssef Ayid, will move from the opposition to the majority to support government projects.

Conversely, the opposition will see a significant influx of members, most notably from the National Rally of Independents (RNI) group led by Mohamed El Bekkouri, which will transition from leading the previous majority to an opposition role.
