Morocco advances 2030 World Cup preparations amid local opposition

Preparations for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, a joint hosting effort between Morocco, Spain, and Portugal, are progressing alongside local political tensions. In Casablanca, construction has begun on an International Broadcasting Centre (IBC). Spanning approximately 6.6 hectares with an investment of roughly 400 million dirhams, the facility is designed to serve as a massive media operations hub. It aims to connect with over 180 international broadcasting organizations to manage the real-time production and distribution of match signals globally.

However, the hosting arrangement faces opposition in the Spanish city of Ceuta. Supporters of the Atletico Ceuta football club have expressed rejection of Morocco’s participation in the tournament. This dissent is linked to ongoing socio-political tensions regarding migration and border security, following a significant influx of migrants from Morocco into Ceuta in late July. Protesters have called for the tournament to be hosted exclusively by Spain and Portugal, reflecting how the sporting event has become intertwined with regional political and social issues.
