Morocco advances Kheng Grou dam and regional water supply projects for 2026 completion

The Kheng Grou dam in Figuig province, slated to become Morocco's fifth‑largest dam, is 78% complete and will be filled with water in December 2026, ahead of its original schedule. With a capacity of 1.069 billion cubic metres, the dam will supply drinking water to about 7,500 residents and expand irrigated land from 415 to roughly 4,300 hectares, easing pressure on over‑exploited aquifers.

In the neighboring Boulemane province, a separate water‑supply scheme drawing from the Hassan II dam will be finished by the end of 2026. Funded with about 251 million dirhams and supported by the African Development Bank, the project will serve roughly 130,000 people in Missour, Ouatat El Haj and surrounding communes. It includes four main pipelines, pumping stations, reservoirs and a chlorination plant, and is managed by the Office National de l’Électricité et de l’Eau Potable (ONEE). Both initiatives are part of Morocco's broader effort to secure water resources amid climate‑driven scarcity.
