Morocco advances Marrakech-Agadir high-speed rail project

Morocco has moved forward with the administrative phase of its high-speed rail (LGV) expansion. A decree adopted on September 1, 2026, and published on September 7, has officially recognized the public utility of the Marrakech-Agadir rail project, as well as the planned connection between Chichaoua and Essaouira.

This legal recognition allows for the commencement of land acquisition and expropriation procedures within the Marrakech-Safi and Souss-Massa regions. The Marrakech-Agadir line is estimated to cost approximately 55 billion dirhams. Due to the challenging terrain of the High Atlas mountains, nearly 70% of the structures on this route are expected to consist of tunnels and bridges.

The Ministry of Transport and Logistics, alongside the Office National des Chemins de Fer (ONCF), is currently seeking international partners to assist with financing and implementation. This project is part of a broader 96 billion dirham national railway program, which includes the Kénitra-Marrakech line that began construction in April 2025.
