Morocco expands agricultural exports to global and EU markets

Morocco is significantly expanding its footprint in the global and European agricultural markets. According to FAO data, Morocco ranked as the sixth-largest watermelon exporter globally in 2024, with export values reaching $94.04 million, making it the top exporter in the Arab world.

In the European Union vegetable market, Morocco has seen a 55.9% increase in exports of key greenhouse products, including tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers. Morocco remains a dominant supplier of tomatoes to the EU, accounting for 68.1% of total imports in 2025. However, competition is intensifying; while Morocco maintains a strong position, Turkey is emerging as a major rival, particularly in the cucumber and pepper sectors.

Data regarding the European tomato market shows a shifting landscape. While Spain has historically held a leading position, Morocco is rapidly closing the gap in volume. In the first five months of 2026, Spain exported 267,350 tons, while Morocco followed closely with 243,470 tons. The total EU import of greenhouse vegetables from non-EU countries has grown significantly, rising from an average of 828,000 tons in 2015-2017 to 1.33 million tons in 2023-2025.
