Morocco battles wildfire in Errachidia oasis amid heatwave

A wildfire broke out on Friday in the Afous oasis of Errachidia province in southeastern Morocco. Firefighting teams have been working since Saturday to contain the blaze, which has damaged extensive palm groves but caused no human casualties.

Moroccan authorities have warned residents near forests in 12 provinces to remain cautious until July 12, citing a red‑level risk classification issued by the National Agency for Water and Forests. The warning coincides with a heatwave forecast to bring temperatures up to 46 °C, increasing the likelihood of further fires. In 2025, wildfires burned roughly 1,728 ha of Moroccan forest, with seasonal grasses accounting for about 45 % of the affected area.
