Morocco enhances water management and industrial pollution controls
Morocco is enhancing its water management and industrial pollution prevention infrastructure. In the Sefrou province, new evaporation basins with a combined annual capacity of 141,000 cubic meters are being developed in Sefrou and El Menzel. These facilities, constructed by the Société régionale multiservices Fès-Meknès (SRM-FM), aim to treat wastewater from olive oil production (margines) to protect water resources, specifically the Sebou River, ahead of the 2026-2027 olive season.
Simultaneously, the role of national dams is evolving into critical economic infrastructure. Beyond simple storage, dams are being used for water transfers, such as moving water from the Sebou basin to the Bouregreg basin. This strategic management supports agricultural irrigation in key regions like Gharb and Souss, and secures water supplies for major industrial hubs near Casablanca. As of mid-September, the national dam filling rate reached over 66%, a significant increase from approximately 33% the previous year.
