Morocco expands aquaculture to 244 projects aiming for 90,000‑ton annual output

Morocco’s aquaculture sector now comprises 244 active projects with a combined target production capacity of about 90,000 tonnes per year, according to the National Agency for the Development of Aquaculture (ANDA). The figures were disclosed at the 27th session of ANDA’s Board of Directors in Rabat, chaired by Secretary of State for Maritime Fisheries Zakia Driouich, and framed as part of the kingdom’s blue‑economy strategy championed by King Mohammed VI.

The agency highlighted the sector’s role in diversifying fisheries, enhancing food security, attracting investment and creating jobs in coastal communities. Progress was noted in expanding national hatcheries to ensure a stable seed supply and in upgrading processing and value‑added facilities to improve product quality and market competitiveness. International cooperation with the World Bank, the Islamic Development Bank and Japan’s JICA is supporting technical assistance, capacity‑building and new investment.

Overall, ANDA presented the sector as a cornerstone of the Halieutis Strategy, emphasizing its contribution to sustainable marine resource use, socio‑economic development and the consolidation of Morocco’s blue economy.
