Morocco expands high-speed rail with Kenitra-Marrakech project

The Office National des Chemins de Fer (ONCF) is undertaking a massive modernization of Morocco’s railway network, headlined by a major high-speed line (LGV) connecting Kenitra to Marrakech. This project, which officially launched on April 24, 2025, involves the construction of approximately 430 kilometers of dedicated high-speed tracks with operating speeds reaching 320 km/h.

The investment for the Kenitra-Marrakech line alone is estimated at 53 billion dirhams. Once completed, the infrastructure aims to significantly reduce travel times, potentially allowing for a journey between Casablanca and Marrakech in about 1 hour and 15 minutes, and connecting Rabat to Mohammed V Airport in just 35 minutes. The broader ONCF investment program is valued at 96 billion dirhams through 2030, which includes the acquisition of 168 new-generation trains and the development of multimodal railway hubs, such as the Casa-Sud station in Casablanca.

These developments are intended to improve connectivity between major metropolises, airports, and sporting venues, particularly in preparation for the 2030 World Cup. Beyond transport efficiency, the project is expected to drive economic growth by creating thousands of jobs and supporting sustainable development through reduced environmental impact compared to other transport modes.
