Morocco expands high‑speed rail network toward 2030

Morocco is rapidly building the continent’s most extensive high‑speed rail system. By 2030 the country plans to have 630 km of high‑speed track in operation, linking Tangier, Rabat, Casablanca, Marrakesh and other major cities with more than 100 new trains. The Al Boraq line, opened in November 2018 at a cost of about $3.1 billion, already cuts the Tangier‑Casablanca journey to just over two hours.

Future phases aim to double the network to 1 100 km by 2040, adding routes to Fes, Agadir and Oujda and even a long‑term proposal for a Strait of Gibraltar tunnel. Officials see the rail expansion as a catalyst for a broader industrial transformation ahead of Morocco’s co‑hosting of the next World Cup.
