Overview

Morocco’s Al‑Boraq line, inaugurated in November 2018, became Africa’s first high‑speed railway, linking Casablanca and Tangier in just over two hours. Built with French and Alstom expertise, the 323‑km route is the initial phase of a broader network slated for completion by 2030.

By mid‑2026 the government announced plans to extend the system to 630 km of high‑speed track by 2030, connecting Rabat, Marrakesh, Fes, Agadir and Oujda, and to operate more than 100 new trains. A longer‑term vision aims for a 1 100‑km network by 2040 and even a Strait of Gibraltar tunnel, positioning the rail project as a catalyst for industrial growth ahead of Morocco’s co‑hosting of the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
