Morocco expands mandatory health insurance to cover millions under new social protection reforms
Morocco has dramatically broadened its health‑care safety net by extending the Assurance Maladie Obligatoire (AMO) to the entire population. The reform replaces the former RAMED scheme with AMO‑Tadamon, whose contributions for the poorest households are fully funded by the state, and introduces AMO‑TNS to bring self‑employed workers such as artisans, traders and professionals into the system. Within three years, more than 24 million new beneficiaries have joined the scheme, including over 10 million people previously in precarious conditions. The unified social register (RSU) now identifies eligible households, enabling access to public and private hospitals, medication reimbursement and better coverage for long‑term illnesses, reducing the financial burden of illness for millions of Moroccan families.
