Morocco health system reforms

In late July 2026 Morocco’s Ministry of Health inaugurated 27 new primary‑care centres across the Fès‑Meknès and Beni Mellal‑Khénifra regions. The facilities, part of a national programme to refurbish 1 600 primary‑care sites with 500 slated for 2026, are equipped with modern biomedical equipment and staffed to serve over 317 000 residents, offering general care, chronic‑disease monitoring, maternal‑child services and epidemic surveillance.

A week later, the government announced a sweeping expansion of mandatory health insurance. The Assurance Maladie Obligatoire (AMO) was extended to the entire population, replacing the previous RAMED scheme with AMO‑Tadamon for the poorest households (fully state‑funded) and introducing AMO‑TNS for self‑employed workers. Within three years the reform is expected to add more than 24 million new beneficiaries, granting access to public and private hospitals, medication reimbursement and better coverage for long‑term illnesses. Together, the new facilities and the broadened insurance scheme illustrate a coordinated effort to improve both the physical infrastructure and financial protection of Morocco’s health system.
