West Africa: ECO currency targets 2027 as Morocco prepares for elections

West Africa is seeing significant political and economic shifts. The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has reaffirmed its goal to launch the ECO single currency by 2027. To maintain momentum, the Convergence Council has directed the ECOWAS Commission to immediately convene the Presidential Task Force to accelerate technical and institutional preparations.

In economic news, the BCEAO reported a 6.7% growth rate for the UEMOA region in 2025, though the institution faces challenges in balancing economic support with inflation control.

In Morocco, the legislative elections scheduled for September 23, 2026, are centered on economic issues such as purchasing power and youth employment. Political parties, including the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM), have unveiled costly social programs to appeal to voters. Additionally, over 3,000 observers have been mobilized to monitor the integrity of the vote.

Diplomatically, Guinea has introduced its first official Foreign Policy Document, establishing a new strategic framework for its international relations. Concurrently, Guinea has reaffirmed its support for Morocco's sovereignty over the Sahara, endorsing the Moroccan autonomy plan as the sole solution to the long-standing dispute.
