Diplomatic support for Moroccan Sahara autonomy plan
Overview
Greece has reaffirmed its support for Morocco’s autonomy plan regarding the Sahara, describing the proposal as a “serious and credible contribution” to the United Nations political process. Following a meeting between Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis and Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, Gerapetritis stated the plan “could constitute the most feasible solution” for resolving the regional dispute.
Greece, serving as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the 2025-2026 term, noted that its position aligns with the European Union and supports the efforts of UN Personal Envoy Staffan de Mistura. The Greek government welcomed the adoption of Resolution 2797, which establishes the Moroccan autonomy proposal as the basis for negotiations.
In addition to Greek support, Guinea has reiterated its firm stance regarding Moroccan sovereignty over the territory. During a joint cooperation commission meeting in Conakry, Guinean Foreign Minister Morissanda Kouyaté described the autonomy plan under Moroccan sovereignty as the “only solution” to the regional dispute. Kouyaté noted that the presence of the Guinean Consulate General in Dakhla serves as a concrete symbol of this diplomatic solidarity.
This stance was further integrated into Guinea’s newly unveiled Foreign Policy Document. Presented by Kouyaté, the strategic framework aims to guide diplomatic actions through eleven priority axes, emphasizing national sovereignty and regional integration while maintaining its position on the Sahara dispute.
