Morocco implements new electoral reforms to boost women's political representation

Morocco has implemented new electoral measures ahead of the 2026 legislative elections aimed at increasing women's representation within the House of Representatives and political parties.

Key reforms include reserving regional electoral lists exclusively for female candidates to ensure seats remain held by women during by-elections or compensation processes. Additionally, financial incentives will be provided to regional lists composed entirely of women under the age of 35. To strengthen female involvement in party leadership, new regulations require that at least four women be included among the twelve members required to establish a political party, with women making up no less than one-fifth of the founding members.

Political scientist Karima Ghrad noted that these mechanisms serve as a test for political parties to move beyond symbolic roles and grant women meaningful decision-making power. She emphasized that achieving parity requires parties to invest in political training and allow women to lead parliamentary committees and fact-finding missions.
