Morocco implements urban heat solutions amid extreme temperature spikes
Morocco is facing intense climatic challenges, characterized by extreme heatwaves and shifting precipitation patterns. A new weather alert has predicted temperatures reaching up to 45°C in several provinces, including Marrakech, Fès, and Meknès, driven by hot, dry winds from the Sahara. This heat follows a period of significant hydrological volatility; after six years of record-breaking drought, the country experienced an unprecedented surge in rainfall during the 2025-26 winter season.
The persistent heat is placing immense pressure on national water resources, accelerating evaporation in major dam basins like the Oum Er-Rbia and Tensift. This environmental stress is impacting the agricultural sector, particularly for olive and citrus crops, and increasing wildfire risks in northern forested regions.
In response to the urban heat island effect, Moroccan authorities in Marrakech and Agadir are piloting infrastructure innovations. To combat the heat-retaining properties of traditional asphalt, engineers are implementing permeable pavements. These porous surfaces are designed to enhance energy efficiency, reduce surface temperatures, and improve stormwater management to mitigate both overheating and flood risks.
