Morocco legislative elections see PAM victory amid low turnout

The recent legislative elections in Morocco were characterized by a notably low voter turnout, with approximately 38% of registered voters participating. This equates to roughly six million voters out of an estimated 27 million eligible citizens, raising questions regarding the political engagement or potential disillusionment of the silent majority.

Despite the low participation, the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM) secured a decisive victory, allowing it to lead the government after previous electoral setbacks. The PAM and the National Rally of Independents (RNI) continue to dominate the political landscape, both parties being composed largely of political elites and technocrats.

Some analyses suggest that the decline in voter mobilization may be linked to domestic tensions regarding Morocco’s diplomatic normalization with Israel. Observers note a growing gap between official state policy and public sentiment, particularly in light of the conflict in Gaza, which has prompted protests calling for the suspension of the 2020 agreements.
