Morocco: Political scrutiny grows over subsidy reforms and cost of living

In Morocco, political parties face increasing scrutiny regarding their ability to address the rising cost of living and the implementation of election promises. A central issue is the reform of the compensation fund, which involves the gradual removal of subsidies on essential goods such as butane gas, sugar, and flour.

Under a previously announced plan, the price of a large butane gas cylinder was set to rise incrementally from 40 dirhams to 70 dirhams by 2026. While some increases were delayed due to social and political sensitivities, the financial burden of maintaining these subsidies remains a significant challenge for the state.

Public debate has also focused on the credibility of political programs, specifically those of the Authenticity and Modernity Party. Citizens are questioning whether political platforms can transition from rhetoric to measurable policies that effectively protect purchasing power and improve social services, especially given the economic pressures experienced during the current government's term.
