Moroccan energy subsidy and cost of living debate

Morocco is facing growing political and social pressure regarding energy costs and the management of essential subsidies. Hussein El Yamani, Secretary General of the National Union of Petroleum and Gas, has called for a reversal of fuel price liberalization to protect consumer purchasing power and stabilize the sector. El Yamani advocated for the reactivation of the SAMIR refinery to reduce the country’s energy dependency, which exceeds 90 percent, and proposed a flexible tax system to mitigate rising costs.

Simultaneously, political parties are under scrutiny over the reform of the compensation fund, which involves the gradual removal of subsidies on butane gas, sugar, and flour. While price increases for butane gas cylinders have faced delays due to social sensitivities, the financial burden of maintaining these subsidies remains a significant state challenge. Public debate has intensified regarding the ability of political programs, specifically those of the Authenticity and Modernity Party, to translate electoral promises into effective policies that protect citizens from economic pressures.
