Morocco potato imports reach record levels following floods
Morocco has seen record-breaking potato imports during the 2025/2026 campaign, exceeding 12,000 tonnes. This volume represents a 50% increase compared to the total imports of the previous five years combined and is 2.4 times higher than the previous record set in 2008/2009.
The surge in imports follows devastating floods in January and February 2026 that impacted northern Moroccan agricultural regions, particularly the Loukkos basin. These floods destroyed significant portions of the domestic crop, forcing the country to seek external supplies to stabilize the market.
European nations served as the primary suppliers. The Netherlands provided over half of the total volume, France accounted for nearly one-third, and Belgium supplied the remainder. This trade dynamic allowed Moroccan importers to access lower-cost produce while providing European farmers with a market for their surplus stocks.
