Morocco receives $13.7 billion in migrant remittances in 2025

Morocco has emerged as a major recipient of migrant remittances in Africa, receiving approximately $13.7 billion in 2025. According to the ‘Remittance Prices Worldwide 2026’ report by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), this figure represents 7% of Morocco's GDP and 18% of its total exports.

Over the last decade, remittances to Morocco have grown by 114%, rising from $6.4 billion in 2016 to $13.7 billion in 2025. This growth rate significantly outpaces the African average of 86% during the same period. Within the continent, Morocco ranks as the third-largest recipient of diaspora funds, trailing only Egypt ($41.5 billion) and Nigeria ($22.8 billion), while surpassing Ethiopia and Kenya.

These financial flows are a critical source of foreign currency for the Moroccan economy. While approximately three-quarters of these funds are used to cover basic household needs, the remaining quarter is directed toward health, education, housing, savings, and income-generating projects. Additionally, the cost of sending money to Morocco via non-banking channels is approximately 4%, which is lower than the African and global averages, though still above the sustainable development goal of 3%.
