Morocco advances military, digital, and agricultural strategic initiatives
Morocco is advancing several strategic initiatives involving military, financial, and agricultural cooperation with international partners.
In the defense sector, the U.S. Africa Command and Moroccan Armed Forces have begun preparations for African Lion 2027, a major joint military exercise scheduled for April. The drills, which will involve over 40 countries, are expected to include live-fire exercises and electronic warfare maneuvers near the Cap Draa enclave, close to the Spanish Canary Islands. Additionally, Moroccan fighter jets recently participated in the Black Crow 26 electromagnetic warfare exercise in France.
On the economic front, Bank Al-Maghrib is preparing to launch the ‘Digital Dirham.’ This digital currency is intended to complement traditional cash, modernize the financial landscape, and improve financial inclusion and remittance processes.
Agricultural ties between Morocco and the United States are also strengthening. The U.S. Department of Agriculture has allocated $33.1 million to Morocco through the ‘Food for Progress’ program to support food safety and livestock sectors. Furthermore, officials from the National Institute for Agricultural Research (INRA) and the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture (NASDA) are exploring collaborations in conservation agriculture, gene editing, and climate resilience.
