Morocco Seeks $26 Billion Funding for African Atlantic Gas Pipeline

Morocco is actively pursuing international financing for the African Atlantic Gas Pipeline, a project valued at about $26 billion. The 6,800 km pipeline would carry roughly 30 billion cubic metres of Nigerian natural gas through more than a dozen West African nations to Morocco’s network and onward to Europe via the Maghreb‑Europe Gas Pipeline.

The financing push follows an intergovernmental agreement signed by ECOWAS heads of state on 19 July, establishing the legal framework for the venture. Jointly developed by Nigeria’s NNPC and Morocco’s ONHYM, the pipeline is promoted as a strategic asset for African economic integration and European energy security. The United States Export‑Import Bank has held preliminary discussions about possible support, while the World Bank declined comment. Securing a financing package of this magnitude remains the principal hurdle for the project’s advancement.
