Morocco to construct $1.5 billion waste‑to‑energy plant in Casablanca

A consortium led by Swiss‑Japanese firm Kanadevia Inova, together with Moroccan energy company Nareva and Japan’s Itochu, will build a $1.5 billion waste‑to‑energy facility in Casablanca. Construction is slated to start by the end of the year with full operations expected by mid‑2030, making it the second plant of its kind in Africa.

The plant will process about 1.5 million metric tons of waste each year, generate roughly 115 MW of electricity—enough for nearly one million people—and reduce greenhouse‑gas emissions by an amount comparable to 20% of Switzerland’s annual output, "like removing 300,000 cars from the road." It will be built by Moroccan contractor Somagec, financed with local debt, and will sell power to state‑owned utility ONEE under a power‑purchase agreement. Environmental groups have raised concerns about potential emissions and impacts on recycling initiatives.
