North African waste-to-energy developments

Overview

North African nations are advancing significant waste-to-energy and waste management initiatives to improve energy recovery and reduce landfill volumes.

In Morocco, a consortium including Kanadevia Inova, Nareva, and Itochu plans to construct a $1.5 billion facility in Casablanca. Expected to be operational by mid-2030, the plant aims to process 1.5 million metric tons of waste annually to generate approximately 115 MW of electricity. The project is intended to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by an amount described as being “like removing 300,000 cars from the road.”

Algeria is developing a €4.4 billion national network involving sorting platforms and energy recovery units to integrate waste collection and recycling. Meanwhile, Tunisia is progressing with a waste treatment project in Djerba under environmental oversight due to its proximity to a Ramsar wetland, alongside a circular economy project funded by Italy and Japan to treat hotel waste via biomethanization.
