Morocco trade deficit widens as Turkish exports surge 20% in early 2026

Turkish exports to Morocco grew by almost 20 % in the first five months of 2026, reaching $1.82 billion and lifting Morocco to the 13th‑largest market for Turkish goods, ahead of Belgium and Ukraine. The rise was driven by strong monthly increases, with May alone accounting for $440.6 million, a 28.6 % jump from the previous year.

During the same period, Morocco’s overall trade deficit widened to over 159 billion dirhams, a 20.8 % increase year‑on‑year. Imports rose 11.8 % to 370.5 billion dirhams, outpacing export growth of 5.8 % to 211.41 billion dirhams. The deficit’s coverage fell to 57.1 %. Growth in imports was led by raw products, energy and equipment, while exports were supported mainly by the automotive and aeronautics sectors, with declines in textiles, electronics and phosphates.
