Morocco water reservoirs reach nearly double last year's levels

Morocco's water reservoirs have reached significant levels as of late August, with approximately 11.5 billion cubic meters of water stored. This volume is nearly double the amount recorded at the same time last year, providing increased security for drinking water supplies and agricultural irrigation heading into the new hydrological year.

Regional distribution of water remains uneven. The Sebou basin holds the largest supply with roughly 4.3 billion cubic meters (over 80% capacity), and the Al Wahda reservoir is nearly 85% full. The Oum Er-Rbia basin has seen a notable recovery, with reservoirs at approximately 60% capacity compared to just 10% a year ago; specifically, the Bin El Ouidane reservoir is 83% full.

However, some areas continue to face challenges. The Al Massira reservoir is at 40% capacity, and the lowest levels persist in the south and southeast. In the Drâa-Oued Noun basin, reservoirs are at 32% capacity, while the Guir-Ziz-Rheris region reports approximately 40%.

While summer evaporation and usage caused a seasonal decline from the 76% peak seen in May, the overall increase in reserves offers a buffer against future drought conditions and supports national food security and economic stability.
