Morrone wildfire emergency shifts to landslide risk downstream

Following recent rainfall and dropping temperatures, the wildfire emergency on Mount Morrone has shifted focus from active flames to the risk of landslides and debris flows in the valleys below.

Geologists have warned that even light rain poses a high risk due to inevitable runoff on the scorched terrain. Regional Civil Protection Director Maurizio Scelli stated that the emergency has moved downstream, noting that debris flows could reach roads and the settlement of Bagnaturo.

A detailed geological report is expected to identify the most vulnerable areas. While Civil Protection will monitor the site with sensors, long-term containment measures, such as protective netting or drainage excavations, will likely be managed by the Maiella National Park.
