Morskie Oko horse transport protest triggers police intervention
Animal rights activists held a protest at Palenica Białczańska on August 8 to demand the end of horse-drawn transport to Morskie Oko in the Tatra Mountains. Organizers, including the social movement Dla Zwierząt and the Lower Silesian Inspectorate of Animal Protection (DIOZ), argue that using animals for tourist transport is inhumane and should be replaced by modern solutions.
Activists claimed that horses are overworked, often laboring for over a dozen hours a day, and that overloaded carriages reduce the animals' working life to approximately three years. The protest resulted in police intervention after demonstrators blocked paths, and one protester lay on the asphalt.
Representatives of the carters' association, such as Andrzej Mąka, denied the allegations of cruelty. They noted that all horses undergo annual veterinary and orthopedic examinations, with only two out of 282 failing this year. They also cited Tatra National Park (TPN) regulations that limit horses to two trips per day and cap carriage capacity at 10 passengers.
To mitigate the conflict, TPN plans to shorten the horse-drawn route later this year, restricting horses to the least steep sections, while introducing electric buses to transport tourists closer to Morskie Oko.
