Mos residents block N-550 highway demanding urban crossing safety

Around 150 residents of Mos halted traffic on the N‑550 for about an hour, displaying a banner that read “Travesía urbana XA!” and calling for the road segment to be converted into an urban crossing. The protest follows a recent accident in which a pilgrim was struck while crossing the highway, prompting local groups, municipal political parties, neighbourhood associations and the N‑550 monitoring commission to demand urgent safety measures.

The municipality, represented by Mayor Nidia Arévalo, has been in talks with the regional government (Xunta), the Diputación de Pontevedra, the Xacobeo 2027 organizers and entities linked to the Camino Portugués. Proposed solutions include an elevated or underground passage for pilgrims, a fixed speed‑radar limited to 50 km/h, and the formal designation of the stretch as an urban thoroughfare. The mayor affirmed that Mos will continue to organize actions until the state commits to concrete improvements.

The initiative reflects broader concerns about road safety on the national N‑550, which carries both local traffic and the Portuguese Way of the Camino de Santiago.
