Mos road safety protest expands

Overview

The front‑on collision on the N‑550 near Louredo on 29 June 2026, which left two people injured and forced a one‑hour closure, was cited by Mos mayor Nidia Arévalo as evidence of chronic safety flaws. She demanded the road be re‑classified as an urban crossing and called for speed‑reduction and pedestrian‑protection measures.

On 7 July the municipal commission held a coordination meeting to finalise the protest scheduled for 10 July. Representatives of the four neighbourhood associations and all three municipal political groups (PP, PSOE, BNG) attended, arranging three buses to bring residents from the Pazo de Mos to the demonstration.

Around 150 residents gathered in front of the Spanish Government sub‑delegation in Pontevedra on 10 July, reiterating demands for urban‑road conversion of the Sanguiñeda and Mos sections, redesign of the Louredo junction, resurfacing at Amieirolongo, improved signage, sidewalk works and drainage cleaning. The municipal commission announced it would intensify actions, planning a future road closure.

On 16 July Barro mayor Xosé Manuel Fernández Abraldés sent a letter to Transport Minister Óscar Puente urging roundabouts at high‑risk junctions, while Arévalo appealed for urgent signage, speed‑limit reviews and police monitoring after a German pilgrim was struck at the Camiño da Quiringosta crossing.

On 4 August Mos residents blocked the N‑550 for about an hour, displaying a banner demanding the segment be designated an urban crossing. The protest called for an elevated or underground pilgrim passage, a fixed 50 km/h speed‑radar and formal urban‑thoroughfare status. The mayor confirmed ongoing talks with the regional government, the Diputación de Pontevedra, the Xacobeo 2027 organisers and Camino Portugués authorities, and pledged further actions until concrete safety improvements are secured.
