Moses Matovu, Afrigo Band founder, dies after fatal Kampala attack

Moses Matovu, the 77-year-old founder and leader of Uganda’s legendary Afrigo Band, has died following a violent attack in Kampala. Matovu, a celebrated saxophonist and vocalist whose career spanned nearly six decades, succumbed to his injuries at Kibuli Hospital on the morning of September 24, 2026.

Police investigations indicate that the incident occurred around 5:30 AM in the Kibuli Market Zone B area of the Makindye Division. While initial reports suggested Matovu was attacked while walking to morning prayers, subsequent police findings suggest the musician was leaving the residence of his girlfriend, Rose Tumusiime, when he was confronted by a male suspect.

The suspect, identified as 41-year-old Vincent Nsamba, is alleged to have been in a previous relationship with Tumusiime. A physical altercation ensued, during which Matovu sustained severe injuries. Nsamba was apprehended by a joint police task force in the Nansana Division of Wakiso District following a manhunt. Tumusiime was also taken into custody to assist with the ongoing murder investigation.

Matovu’s death has drawn widespread mourning from the Ugandan music community, with peers describing him as a pioneer and a pillar of the nation’s live-band tradition. He was a central figure in shaping modern Ugandan pop music through his leadership of Afrigo Band since its inception in 1975.
