Death of musician Moses Matovu in Kampala

Overview

Moses Matovu, the 77-year-old founder and leader of Uganda’s Afrigo Band, died on September 24, 2026, following a violent attack in the Kibuli Market Zone B area of Kampala. Matovu, a prominent saxophonist and vocalist known as ‘Papa Moi’, succumbed to severe head injuries at Kibuli Hospital.

Police investigations indicate the incident occurred around 5:30 AM as Matovu was leaving the residence of Rose Tumusiime. He was confronted by Vincent Arnold Nsamba, also known as ‘Sitenda’, who had a previous relationship with Tumusiime. A physical altercation ensued, resulting in Matovu’s injuries. While Nsamba reportedly admitted to punching Matovu, he told investigators he ‘did not intend to kill the musician’.

Following a manhunt, Nsamba appeared before the Makindye Chief Magistrates’ Court on September 28, 2026. He has been charged with murder and remanded to Luzira Upper Prison, with the case scheduled for mention on November 3, 2026. During proceedings, Nsamba claimed that Matovu appeared ‘weak and intoxicated’ before losing his balance and hitting his head, adding that he fled the scene out of fear after seeing the musician bleeding.

On September 30, police and military detectives conducted a crime scene reconstruction in Kibuli. Suspects Rose Tumusiime and Vincent Nsamba participated in the exercise to verify statements.

On October 6, Director of Public Prosecutions Lino Anguzu clarified that Rose Tumusiime will not face criminal charges. Prosecutors are instead treating Tumusiime as a potential witness to assist in establishing the facts of the attack.

In response to the loss, Afrigo Band management announced that the group will continue operations. Executive Director James Wasula stated the band remains intact, while musician Joanita Kawalya noted that Matovu had spent years preparing members to carry on his work.
