Moses Matovu, leader of Afrigo Band, dies following attack in Kampala
Moses Matovu, the 77-year-old leader of the renowned Afrigo Band, has died following an attack in Kampala. Matovu reportedly sustained injuries during a confrontation in the Kibuli Market Zone B area on September 24, 2026. He was subsequently taken to Kibuli Hospital, where he passed away.
Police have launched a murder investigation into the incident. Preliminary reports suggest the confrontation occurred around 5:30 am at a woman's residence, involving a man who had a previous relationship with the occupant. While a suspect has been identified, they initially fled the scene, and a woman was arrested to assist with investigations.
Matovu was a central figure in Ugandan music for nearly six decades, leading Afrigo Band through its 50th anniversary in 2025. Following his death, Afrigo director James Wasula and other band members pledged to preserve Matovu's legacy and ensure the group continues to operate at its established standards. Thousands of mourners gathered in Kyanja for his burial on Friday, September 25.
