Mosquito-Borne Disease Threat Grows in Mexico and Major U.S. Cities
Mexico’s rainy season has amplified the presence of five key insect vectors—including Aedes aegypti, Culex spp., Triatoma spp., Phlebotomus spp., and Simulium spp.—across 22 of its 32 states. The 30% increase in rainfall this year has expanded breeding habitats, boosting transmission of dengue, Zika, chikungunya, West Nile virus, leishmaniasis and Chagas disease. Resistance to common repellents is rising, and many rural clinics lack rapid diagnostic kits, heightening the public‑health risk.
In the United States, a recent survey of mosquito activity identified ten urban hotspots, with Los Angeles, Chicago and New York leading the list, followed by Detroit, Atlanta, Washington, D.C., Houston, Dallas, Cleveland and Denver. Warmer temperatures and urban‑heat effects lengthen the mosquito season, while stagnant water and dense populations provide ideal breeding grounds. CDC entomologists warn that Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, capable of spreading dengue, Zika and chikungunya, are becoming more prevalent, and West Nile virus activity is also climbing.
Public‑health officials in both countries advise personal protection measures—such as EPA‑registered repellents, eliminating standing water, and using screens—and call for stronger surveillance and vector‑control programs to curb the escalating disease risk.
