Mosquito control measures emphasized to combat dengue and related viruses

Health authorities in Nicaragua and Argentina are emphasizing prevention measures to combat the spread of dengue, chikungunya, and zika viruses. In Nicaragua, officials are monitoring the Aedes albopictus mosquito, also known as the Asian tiger mosquito, which has been present in the country since 2003. While Aedes aegypti remains the primary vector, the adaptive nature of Aedes albopictus poses a potential transmission risk.

In Argentina, the Ministry of Health of Jujuy is promoting year-round prevention to disrupt the mosquito life cycle. Key recommendations include eliminating standing water in containers such as cans, bottles, and tires, as well as cleaning animal water bowls and clearing gutters. Authorities stress that since these diseases have no cure, reducing mosquito populations through domestic and peri-domestic breeding site control is the most effective defense.
