MotoGP to move Australian Grand Prix to Adelaide street circuit
MotoGP is planning to move the Australian Grand Prix from the Phillip Island circuit to a new street circuit in Adelaide starting in 2027. The decision aims to bring races closer to fans and urban infrastructure, potentially increasing attendance and revenue.
Carlos Ezpeleta, MotoGP's Chief Sporting Officer, stated that while the move is ambitious, safety remains ‘non-negotiable’ during the circuit design process. This follows criticism from former world champion Casey Stoner, who expressed concerns regarding whether a street circuit can provide the same safety margins as a permanent facility like Phillip Island.
Due to logistical challenges, MotoGP does not plan to expand its current 22-race calendar. Consequently, the addition of new urban venues like Adelaide will likely result in the removal of existing European races to maintain a balance in the schedule.
