MotoGP Australian Grand Prix relocation to Adelaide

Overview

MotoGP has announced plans to relocate the Australian Grand Prix from Phillip Island to a new street circuit in Adelaide beginning in 2027. The move follows the final race at Phillip Island in 2026.

Proponents, including four-time winner Jack Miller, argue that the remote location of Phillip Island creates accessibility obstacles for fans. Miller noted that “the hardest part is getting people to the circuits,” suggesting an urban setting will boost spectator growth.

While the transition aims to increase attendance and revenue by utilizing urban infrastructure, the plan has faced scrutiny. Former champion Casey Stoner raised concerns regarding whether a street circuit can offer the same safety margins as a permanent facility. In response, MotoGP Chief Sporting Officer Carlos Ezpeleta stated that safety remains ‘non-negotiable’ during the design process.

To accommodate the new venue without expanding the current 22-race calendar, MotoGP may remove existing European races to maintain schedule balance.
