Motorcycles make up over 80% of vehicles in Dominican Republic border provinces

A 2025 report from the Dominican Republic’s Directorate General of Internal Taxes (DGII) shows that the border zone has 261,710 registered vehicles, representing 3.9% of the national fleet of 6.64 million. Between 2023 and 2025 the national vehicle stock grew 14.3%, while the border zone grew 15.9%. Motorcycles dominate the border fleet, accounting for 81.2% of vehicles there, compared with 57.9% nationwide. Monte Cristi holds 58.2% of border registrations, followed by Dajabón (16.1%) and Santiago Rodríguez (10.1%). In Monte Cristi and Dajabón, motorcycles comprise 88.4% and 80.2% of local fleets respectively. Cars represent only 11.8% of border vehicles, less than half the 30.7% share in the rest of the country. Buses have a minimal presence, with Independencia recording the highest proportion at 3.3% of its border fleet. Ownership in 2025 was split 53.5% private individuals and 46.5% legal entities.
