Turkey traffic incidents: Fatal accidents and major enforcement actions

Turkey has seen several significant traffic-related incidents and law enforcement operations. In Turgutlu, a 35-year-old motorcyclist, Tolga Başaran, died following a collision with a truck at a junction. The truck driver was taken into custody.

In Istanbul, a fatal accident in Bakırköy involving 22-year-old student Kutay Altuğ Yalçın has sparked legal debate. Security footage shows Yalçın’s motorcycle hitting a car that had stopped to turn, after which a third vehicle reportedly struck him while he was on the road. His family is seeking justice, questioning why the initial driver was not detained while the second driver was.

Law enforcement actions have also resulted in substantial fines. In Çanakkale, gendarmerie inspections over a one-month period resulted in 2,852 vehicles receiving fines totaling over 32 million TL. In Eskişehir, an unlicensed driver and vehicle owner were fined 240,000 TL during a routine check.

In İzmir, a court overturned a traffic fine issued to a taxi driver because the honorary traffic inspector failed to provide concrete evidence, such as photos or video, to support the allegation of a pedestrian right-of-way violation. Additionally, in Bakırköy, a man was detained and fined 180,000 TL after a road rage incident involving a family was captured on camera and identified by virtual patrol units.
